Week 6: Drawing and Painting

**************                 Hello Again!              **************

 10-09-2022

I hope everyone has had a wonderful week this week. This week was also another crazy one. My cousin got married in Helen, GA this past week and I was fortunate enough to get excused from classes and attend as a member of the bridal party. This meant the week was crazy with activities, planning, and the ceremony. Along with this meant a lot of mingling and meeting people. It was an insane week.

However, this week I was finally able to experience that feeling of bliss while working on this project. I took time throughout the week to do some sketching or painting progress on my herb project. While it was weird I had a portable watercolor set and brushes, I didn't mind. With all the stress going on, it was a wonderful experience to just sit and paint/draw for 30 minutes or so.

Physically, I felt some relief. The wedding took place in the mountains, meaning every sidewalk is either going up or down a hill. There was a lot of walking and I am not in the best of shape. However, when I was able to sit down and paint, I truly forgot my feet were hurting. Maybe it's because I was finally able to take 30 minutes off of them but I like to think it is also because I was mentally distracted.

This weeks herb was Rosemary. I hope you enjoy the progress I made this week!

On Monday, I decided I was going to sketch out my rosemary. It took me about 30 to 45 minutes to find a good reference photo and start sketching. Immediately, I fell into the zone and started to draw. There was a fire in the cabin so I lost myself in drawing and the crackling of the fire. This one was more difficult to draw for me personally but I loved the challenge.

Physically, I forgot about my feet and back hurting from the unpacking and walking I did that day. This time it actually was lessened by the time I was done with the activity. This project gave me an excuse to take a break. Mentally, I was in a world of lines and leaves. It was very soothing to me and I really loved it. Similar to the basil, I am still fitting in my theme of growth. Here is a picture of my progress.

***********************                       Wednesday                  ***********************

On Wednesday, I decided I wanted to do the painting on the drawing. I just wanted to layer some colors on the page so I decided to go over it with light and dark green watercolors. It took me about 30 to 45 minutes, just like the drawing one did. The leaves on rosemary are smaller than basil, so it was harder to keep in the lines. Sometimes I failed at that but its okay because I am developing a messy art style. I took brown and colored in the stem before fading it into the top.

Physically, I was very immersed. My pain was not as bad this day, for it was a lot of visiting and meeting people. It gave me some time to look at how the colors blend and try to replicate that. While my colors are messy, I love the way it turned out. Mentally, I was just obsessed with getting the best blending I could. I know that the more you add to it, the worse it could look. I decided that once I got it to a comfortable blend, I would stop. Here is a picture of my painting.

***********************                             Friday                    ***********************

On Friday, I decided to do my outlining and add all the information I have gathered about rosemary. I didn't love the outlining as much on the rosemary as I did on the basil. I feel the rosemary may have looked better if it was freeform but I could not do one and not the other. Overall, I still love this project. I cannot wait to continue expanding my herbs and art skills.

Physically, I didn't really notice any difference this time. The day of the wedding was crazy and I was going-going-going all day. It was a nice break but it didn't do much for me physically. Mentally, however, it was a nice break. Shown below is the final product.

See you all next week!
